Choosing your neighbourhood
The most sought-after addresses are the 8th (Golden Triangle, palace hotels and haute couture), the 6th and 7th (elegant Left Bank, Saint-Germain and the Eiffel Tower), the 1st (Louvre, Place Vendôme) and the 16th (chic residential, Trocadéro). The 3rd and 4th, the Marais, charm with their history and neighbourhood life. Your choice depends on your priority: prestige and shopping (8th), culture and art de vivre (6th/7th), landmarks (1st), residential calm (16th) or character (Marais).
The Marais (3rd-4th) is lively, historic and creative: galleries, designer boutiques, nightlife and medieval lanes. Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th) is quieter and more literary: legendary cafés, art galleries, the Luxembourg Garden. Choose the Marais for energy and character, Saint-Germain for understated elegance and culture.
For a first stay, the 1st and 7th arrondissements are ideal: you are minutes on foot from the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Musée d'Orsay and the Eiffel Tower. The 6th is an excellent balance of landmarks, charm and Parisian art de vivre.
The 7th arrondissement (Champ-de-Mars, Invalides) and the 16th (Trocadéro, Passy) offer the most spectacular Eiffel Tower views. The Trocadéro in particular is the city's most famous vantage point.
The 8th is the capital of luxury: Avenue Montaigne, Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré and the Champs-Élysées concentrate the greatest houses. The 1st (Place Vendôme, Rue Saint-Honoré) adds fine jewellery and watchmaking. The 6th is wonderful for designers and interiors.
The 16th (residential, next to the Bois de Boulogne) and the 7th (elegant and peaceful) are perfect for families. The 6th, beside the Luxembourg Garden, combines calm, green space and amenities.
The 8th is the neighbourhood of visible prestige (palace hotels, haute couture, Michelin-starred dining), ideal if you want to be at the heart of the action. The 16th offers quieter, residential luxury: large Haussmannian apartments, museums and Eiffel Tower views, perfect for those seeking calm and space.
The 8th has the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris. The 2nd (around Rue Montorgueil) and the 6th are paradises for gourmets, from chef-led bistros to exceptional tables. The Marais (3rd-4th) excels for trend-setting addresses and markets.
The 7th gives you mornings with a view of the Eiffel Tower and the Seine, the most romantic choice. Saint-Germain-des-Pres (6th), with the Luxembourg Gardens and its hushed cafes, is perfect for couples. The Marais (3rd-4th) appeals to those who love wandering hand in hand through historic lanes.
The 8th (Triangle d'Or, near the Champs-Elysees and many corporate headquarters) and the 2nd (the Bourse and Opera district) are the most practical for work: well connected, close to business centres and good restaurants for a client dinner. Our apartments there offer a proper desk and the quiet you need between meetings.
The 16th (Passy, Trocadero) and the 7th are the most peaceful in the evening, residential and free of nightlife noise. The 6th stays calm once you step away from the main avenues. If you are sensitive to noise, avoid the busiest streets of the Marais and Montorgueil at weekends.
Expect roughly 350 to 700 EUR per night for two people, and 450 to 1,200 EUR for a two or three bedroom apartment, depending on the neighbourhood, season and size. That is far less than an equivalent palace-hotel suite, for much more space. Rates rise during Fashion Week and major trade shows.
For peak periods (spring, September to October, Fashion Week, the year-end holidays), book 2 to 3 months ahead: the finest apartments go quickly. Off-season, a few weeks is usually enough. Booking direct guarantees the best rate and real-time availability.
The 1st puts the Louvre and the Tuileries on your doorstep, the 7th the Musee d'Orsay and the Rodin Museum, the 16th the Trocadero museums (Marmottan, Modern Art, Architecture). For a full cultural immersion, the 1st and the 7th are unbeatable.
